I favor the leather removable pads myself. I almost always have to add one for length, not the recoil reduction, as the vintage doubles that were stocked long enough for me are few and far between. The downside is that they hide pretty figure in the wood sometimes.

I use the tie on type of butt pad rather than the velcro type. I lost a very expensive Galco pad grouse hunting in Maine a few years ago. It probably made a great snack for a black bear.

In the field, the velcro attachments could easily be taped over with our favorite duct tape. A lesson learned.

Oddly, the best leather covered pad I have ever owned is on the butt of my wonderful Galazan Inverness. It was a $500 option and worth every dollar. It doesn't exist without picture proof. I purchased this CE Fox out of it's Maker's inventory at a handsome discount. The Gentleman who ordered this little 28 never got the opportunity to see it as he was called by his Maker. I needed a little extra LOP so I decided on a leather butt. They gave it at "cost", $300

Bob, those leather covered pads are very classy. I had one made for my Damascus twenty-gauge DH that had been shortened for a youth or a lady.

Thanks guys. I may have to chew on this one for a while. It's grouse season now so I will be switching between the Wm. Evans 16, the Parker Trojan that was restocked and fits me well. I will still need to have the stock on the Evans bent to give me a little more drop. I shoot it well on rising birds like grouse and pheasants but I do get a fair amount of cheek slap. I can't shoot a round of sporting clays without a nice tender lump under the cheek bone. Tall and skinny with a stork neck makes the old 3" DAH perfect for me.

I have looked at my matched pair of Evans sidelocks also with the intention of getting them a little lower at the "cheek". What I have found is that a bend would bring the heel down a bit, but the "cheek" would not move much. Shaving the top of the stock or adding a little height to the ribs are the only two actions that would make my guns a perfect fit. I have decided to learn how to shoot them while seeing a little more rib than I am used to. It has worked out so far.

Bill,
I have a little Belgian 16 guild gun that suffers from the same malady. I am looking down on the rib, and in my effort to see it flat I always cheek the comb too hard and it recoils into my cheek. Being unwilling to do either of the fixes you mention I have decided to move it on down the line. I just can't make allowances, like "floating the bird", for high shooting guns.
Man, I hate selling guns.
OBTW, check your private messages, Bill.

Most of my guns need more drop. I am thinking about selling some of my guns and just getting a few higher quality guns that actually have the correct LOP and DAH. The one gun that does fit me well is a restocked Parker Trojan. I shot a cheating man's 100 for 100 at a charity event 2 weeks ago. Actually I shot a 86 but because they were selling Mulligans I purchased 14 and hit all of them. No cheek slap with this gun with 15 1/8" LOP and 3" DAH. I guess a gun that fits really does what it is intended to do.
