That stock looks like a plain Black walnut stock to me. Maybe a restock at the factory several years later. Maybe a restock by non factory person. Maybe just the worst real factory English stock that I have seen on a C grade. I tell you this much if I had bought that gun new and it came with that wood Ansley would be hearing from me. Why the heck spring for a C grade and get a poor looking stock like that?

KY - is this gun keeping you up at night?

I buy the barrels, action, and hope the wood keeps its part of the bargain.
I've guns with great wood, and some that are just so-so.
You've got to like 'em for what they are.
I'm liking the so-so ones more everyday now - too nice of wood bugs me sometimes.

Maybe the stock might have some colored varnish over it? Both photos have waht looks like brush strokes running long aways. The are some marks also in the finish -they look white. Also look at the light colored chips in the finish on the black base of the pad. I have some older varnish in my shop and a lot of it has a color pigment in it and it covers up most anything. But it looks white when it is dinged. Not what I would do tyo cover nice wood but strange things happen over the years. As someone said the inletting at the head looks tight and the period pad looks rght too. May be this is a diamond in the rough when the finish is stripped off by a good stock guy.

Extra finish, factory restock, more figure under the brushed on varnish, you name it. I wouldn't care as long as the Monte Carlo does not show signs of a graft and the Callahan letter says "Monte Carlo". If the gun has to be restocked to make it proper, the total cost of the gun goes into X Grade territory. I still think it's a neat gun and someone had to buy it. Congratulations to the new owner.
