My great Jake is on his last legs, too feeble to get in the boat, truck or car. He becomes a pup when I pick up a gun for a little walk. Last week I sluiced a partridge on the property to give him that last pleasure. I'm too old to see another pup through. I'm trying to make a care-arrangement for another dog when Jake is gone. I fear without a dog it's the end of it for me. What's gunning without a dog? | | |

Mark, thanks for telling us about Moose and how you loved him. We can all relate to that and to your loss.
It's hard. We all know it's coming, from the day the puppy arrives. But is it worth it? "Oh yeah!", I think most of us would say.

Many here provided words that comforted me immensely the last time this happened to me. I hope the following little prayer by John Rucker can do the same for you.

 "Oh God, my master,
 should I gain the grace
to see thee face to face
 when life is ended,
grant that a little dog who once pretended
 that I was God
might see me, face to face."

 James

canvasback, my eyes, misty while reading this whole thread, spilled into tears after reading the little poem you posted.
Mark, it sounds like you had a great hunter and wonderful friend. Like many here I sure know how that feels, and likewise know how it feels when they've left. That rock that's ripping through your gut will get smaller in time.

Don't even bother thinking about other dogs right now. But the time will come when another one comes to your call. He/She may not be Moose, but don't be surprised when you find that dog bringing a smile to your heart.
