I came across a wonderfully svelte 20ga SxS in good shooter condition at a good price. It is a sidelock gun with straight grip gun. The buttstock has plain grain and is in sound condition. Unfortunately, the LOP is about 2" too short for me. Restocking the gun would probably cost more than the price of the gun.

I've heard of people doing buttectomies on pistol grip guns rather than doing a full restock. Due to the angles involved with a pistol grip, the glue surface area can be quite large which ensures a strong bond. It is not clear to me whether such large surface areas are possible with a straight grip gun.

Anyone ever do a buttectomy on a straightgrip gun? Is it possible? Does it work well? Cost?

TIA

Sort of like doing a BIG pad unless you want to change drop and cast. A good grain match is very important or an artist with skill at coloring the new wood.

The answer is maybe it can be done but you need to look at the stock closely. Is the grip end tightly inlet? Is the grain flow good? Is the grip large enough for a fillet of wood to tie both grip and butt together? Can the glueline be hid? If the answer is no to any of these questions the I would pass on trying the job. You could always do an extension and have the grain enhanced to blend it. Much easier job. Do a search here to see what can be done.

KY Jon - Thanks for your input.

"Is the grip end tightly inlet?" Yes.

"Is the grain flow good?" Yes.

"Can the glueline be hid?" Yes.

"Is the grip large enough for a fillet of wood to tie both grip and butt together?" This the fundamental question: Would a straight grip gun provide a large enough bonding area for a buttectomey to work?

Mark Dube provided images of a broken straight grip Parker repaired with the 'fillet' method. Looks like it would work with a new butt. You might discuss with David Trevallion 207-361-1130 but the work may not be less expensive than a restock.

I had Cody/Keith Kearcher do a transplant on my 1915 Ithaca Flues 16 gauge. It transformed an unshootable family heirloom with 3" of DAH into a treasured shooter. It was a pistol grip and I had them build a straight grip to my much longer and higher dimensions, put on a pad and extend the tang. It was gone for just 2 weeks. No one can detect this. This is a fairly thin grip and I have hundreds and hundreds, if not a thousand, rounds through it. I would do this again without hesitation.
