I always liked the use of superlatives in his advertising....even when his products weren't exactly super!

His "P.T. Barnum" style of advertising lives on in the "low rent district" of cable TV channels: "BUT WAIT, there's MORE!"

Imagine the satisfaction Dick Cabela must have felt knocking Herter off his throne, and in fact eventually owning his trade name.

I had a friend who bought one of his "bargian O/U s back in the 70s. It shot about 2' low from one barrel.

I loved the catalogs, too. My favorite line, which I will never forget, is a description of his .401 Powermag Revolver round: ..."it will flatten a human no matter where you hit him." Priceless.

From "GEORGE THE HOUSEWIFE" - Page 80....
"The fat of Zebra is highly prized in Africa for rubbing on women's breasts, supposedly keeping them well filled out and from sagging. ... I know a lot of American women that could stand a treatment or two of zebra fat. Continually dieting and overbathing is reducing American women to a race with pendulous poorly filled breasts.

The page facing this bit of sage advice is a picture of a well-developed nubile African woman.

When I was a kid we had to stop at Waseca to go thru the closeout building, a cross between an Army Navy store, and a Swap meet. Our neighbor at home always said if you watched out for junk you could outfit a polar bear hunt, or an Amazon fishing trip. For a short time there was a clay pigeon production factory in Iowa Falls, IA on Rocksylvania Ave. and there was a closeout room there. I was always amazed how he could invent all that stuf that was " World Famous" . Have a fishing pamphlet that explains how to catch bluegills on sinkers, a reloading manual that has nothing available that wasn't model perfect and a 1972 full catalog that with everything else also has silk fabric and gem stones including diamonds.Catalogs ain't what they used to be. Who can forget the Herter's 247 Ram Magnum with it's double shoulder. I did shoot a lot of ducks and geese with Herter's all plastic shotshells, wish they and the Activs or Wandas would come back they would be great out here on the saltwater.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.
