I'm really liking that engraving at the 15:40 mark.

Can anyone elaborate on how the tubes are made? The video shows the machining, but are they first forged on a mandrel?

Can anyone elaborate on how the tubes are made? The video shows the machining, but are they first forged on a mandrel? Shotgun and rifle barrels start from this. They're drilled, bored, rifled (if a rifle) and contoured externally before being joined and ribbed. This is the breech end. The extra material projecting below the "tube" will become the barrel lumps. The second photo shows the tube portion in a rough turned state.

Thanks Dewey. I just assumed all shotgun barrels were forged in some way. I attribute that to all the M37's, 870's and SKB-made Ithacas in my life.

They are. The 'raw material' Dewey shows is a forging. Barrels are 'machined forgings'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Buoivte49cIf steel is poured into a mold and allowed to cool, it's a casting. If it's worked in a hot plastic state and then cooled it's a forging.

I got a 4 hour tour of the H&H factory about 5 years ago. Like stepping back 100 years. The Plant manager who guided us pointed out that a significant part of their business is the one-off ("I've got it, you don't") product. I got to hold a 20 gauge 3 barrel S x S x S, which surprisingly didn't feel too clubby. They did admit that regulating the triggers was giving them a"Bit of a problem"
Also got to see (Sorry mate, i don't have the cabinet key with me") a 4 bore S x S with "$100,000 worth" of engraving on it.
I guess the rich are just a bit different than the rest of us

Thanks! It made me go find that video, which I rather enjoyed.

What I meant to say was, "I just assumed all shotgun barrels were hammer forged in some way." You seem to be confused. ALL forging involves a "hammer" (of some sort) which is used to work the hot, soft metal into a given shape. Not all forging involves a hand-held hammer (unless we're talking about farriers). I know that Ithaca's cute little stamp shows a hammer and anvil but I guarantee that neither of those tools was used in the making of their barrels. Here are a couple of photos of hammer forges.

Automated rotary forging. This is the 'hot' kind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtqwlgEC-bgNeato. There must be a cold hammer forging video someplace..
