Hello,

I am a retired teacher and firearms enthusiast. I like old and unusal stuff. Dont mess with much that is Post WWII. I am primarily a researcher and guns are my favorite topic. I am not a dealer but I do help people when they get dad's guns and don't know what to do. Thus the reason I wound up here.

The Peterlongo Cape Gun appeared on my doorstep a week or so ago. I found out some stuff. It is black powder proofed. It has good bores and a tight action. It has double set triggers. The shotgun is 16 ga. chamber for 2 & 5/8. The rifle is 8mm X 72 Sauer. It is well used, most of metal finish is gone with a bit of plumb bluing scattered about and small amounts of faint case tither and yon. The wood has all the normal wear with a small chip on the fore end above the wedge, otherwise it is solid The strap is old and appears to have been with the gun a long time. Here is a link to pictures

(You may have to cut a paste.)

I am looking for specific information and best guesses at to value.

You can contact me direct at twines1@comcat.net

Thanks

Tom the New Guy

1st pass thru Ferlach proof - 793.09.15'8.7'5 - Nr. 793 for 1909 with one tube diameter being 15.8mm & the other 7.5mm.

Final pass was in 1911.

Simple Ferlach field grade "cape" gun intended for hunters of modest means. Peterlongo was one of the largest Austro-Hungarian gun dealers who sold many firearms by mail-order all over the Dual Empire and beyond. Here in Central Europe such guns are relatively inexpensive. A rather interesting and nice classic nevertheless.

With kind regards,
Jani

Johann(Hans?) Peterlongo 1908 - about the time the sporting weapon was constructed. This Peterlongo must be the son of the original founder of the concern as most give Johann Peterlongo hung out his shingle in 1854. Oddly enough there was a Johann Hans Peterlongo born 1.01.1854 and passing this life on 5.21.1930 in Innsbruck.

I've seen the following a couple of times:

Johann Peterlongo wurde 1826 geboren und verstarb 1898. Die Firma wurde dann von Hans Peterlongo, der vermutlich 1930 stirbt, weitergeführt. Nachfolger wird Richard Mahrholdt, der das Unternehmen in 'Tiroler Waffenfabrik Peterlongo-Richard Mahrholdt & Sohn' umbenennt.

So being born in 1826 he should have had his master's sheepskin by circa 1850 & that would pair well with the founding of his concern in 1854, the same year his son Johann Hans Peterlongo was born.

Summed it up lovely Jani & jaegers of the Dual Monarchy or k.u.k. Monarchy must have placed many orders.

Kind Regards,

Johann Peterlongo (1926-1898) started as an Innsbruck merchant who soon specialized in firearms. He advertised guns in newspapers heavily, but not before 1858 - at least according to my research. The first firearms he advertised were Colt-type percussion revolvers and heavy target rifles.

Thanks for all the great responses. I gather this gun was built by his son 10 years or so after the Sr. Peterlongo past. I understand some of the information on the coding, the tube size, and the year date 09. I don't get the the 793 or how 1911 is the second pass through. I am still looking for best opinions on value.

Thanks again.

Tom

Hello Tom,

This gun was not built by the Peterlongo firm, but sold by them. Peterlongo bought it from Ferlach gunmakers, for resale.

The final pass to complete the process was in 1911 & this example was assigned nr. 793 for the year 1911. They would assign numbers to make the sporting weapon anonymous to prevent bias to a specific maker(s).
