If the barrels on a SXS do not wiggle with the fore end off
but you can see a little daylight between the barrels or rather how much of a gap is too much to be safe?
Thank you,

Is the daylight between the barrels water table and receiver's water table? Some guns are made this way. If between the barrels face and receiver face and you can see light, I would say they are off face but they must be hitting somewhere to stop them from wiggling.

Are you talking a little gap between the barrels and the face of the action or between the barrels and the watertable?

as i understand it, action/barrel looseness, is not an off face issue...it is rather a bite or hook issue, depending on weather looseness is vertical or horizontal.

and generally, up to .004 day light between breech and receiver face is considered by my gunsmith to be safe...but, as always, get professional advise before shooting any old gun, weather off face or not.

keep it simple and keep it safe...

If it wiggles , it's loose. If there is any daylight at all visible between the breech face and the barrels it is off face. Two different things, neither okay.

Doesn't the term "Loose" describe up-and-down movement, and "Off-Face describe side-to side?

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

I have an old Gallyon & Sons. With the forearm on, the action is tight, I can see no light between the barrels and face of the action, and I cannot pull a piece of paper out with the barrels closed on it. However, with the forearm removed there is side to side play. Would this be considered off face?

Yes, assuming the gun is closed when you determined this. A little side to side play when the barrels are opened is still undesirable but isn't unsafe. The gun as it is closed, bites engaged is most important

Some gunsmiths hide an off face gun by peening the forend loop, thus setting the forend iron back tighter into the action knuckle. Eventually recoil will work the forend back to were it belongs, and you will have a gun that is loose. Worse yet is if the peen the action knuckle...

Yes. A good test, with the forend off: Grasp the barrels near the muzzle, muzzle up and stock down, as you would a broom. Then "sweep" the gun back and forth. You shouldn't feel any movement. If you do, it's off face.
