I am talking about between the barrels and action face not the water table.
I can easily pull a piece of copy paper through the gap.
Thank you.

Then it's off face. Paper is .003 to .006 depending on weight.

It will only get worse.

If 'ol Ed said that a gap you could toss a live cat through was OK, would you believe him??? They must have used some really thick smoke to fit those barrels.

"ol ed", aka ed lander, has been a general gunsmith in continuous practice since 1946...only a mean spirited malcontent would doubt the value of his gun repair wisdom and experience.

The old way of doing so at gun shows was to use paper a dollar bill, open the gun and insert bill then close and see if you can pull the bill out.

jdw: the dollar bill test is of little value. a visual inspection is far better. plus, placing anything between the barrels and the action face and then closing the gun, puts unnecessary stress on the hinge pin...some high end guns are so finely fit that stressing the action with foreign objects inserted in the action of the gun can contribute to the degrading of the otherwise fine fit of some best guns.

on this subject of evaluating guns here is a link to a valuable gunsamerica published guide on the subject:

Before anyone is crazy enough to take Eddy Good's advice on "on face" please recall how a buyer of one of his tarted up POS guns came on here when he tried to return a gun Eddy stuck him with that was off face !

A gun is either on the face or off the face.

It's a pass/fail test. Like pregnancy.

Burrard writes of examining used guns for purchase and states that sometimes it's possible to see daylight through the barrel/action interface. He indicates this is an 'off the face' condition.

The Major states that further damage is caused by continued use in an off the face condition.

Accidents are possible. Split rims may occur. Gas jets may cause erosion or outright failure.

This is not new information.

Fix the gun, don't shoot it.

funny 2 years ago a man once posted this...

an as to "what is tight? what is on face?"

I looked in to hit. ah listened to alternative definitions...

but have decided that for my purposes, it still means the same old thing:

- tight means, as in when gun is fully assembled, it locks up tight when it is in the ready to fire position.

- on face means, as in there aint no day light between the breech end of the barrels and the vertical mating flat of the receiver.

and now it is...

and generally, up to .004 day light between breech and receiver face is considered by my gunsmith to be safe...but, as always, get professional advise before shooting any old gun, weather off face or not.
