Mapquest recommends coming off 81 at Wilkes Barre and taking 309 the rest of the way. That looks like a poorer choice than taking 81 all the way to New Milford. What do you fellows do who are coming from the south on 81? Thanks for help. I will use Ernies list to try for a hotel. Any recommendations?

I will use Ernies list to try for a hotel. Any recommendations? I had a good friend pass and will know tomorrow if I can make the shoot. I have a room in Montrose - three nights. If you are having difficulities finding lodging, let me know and we'll put your name on my reservations rather than cancel them.

Eightbore and others traveling I-81 north from the south, or I-80 and I-81 from the west - you can use Mapquest and get off I-81 at Wilkes Barre. However that route will take you through many smaller towns, more secondary road traffic, and multiple route numbers - 309, 29, 6, etc. Taking 81 all the way to the Montrose exit as shown on Ernie's map will be a bit longer mileage wise, but will be easier at the end of a long drive up.
I'm not familar with most of the hotels and B&B's on Ernie's list. The ones in or near Montrose will be the closest. If you are willing to drive about 40 minutes you won't go wrong staying at the Shadowbrook Resort in Tunkhannock. It has a Perkins Rest. as part of the complex, also a nice golf course. Phone number is on the HH list. However it may be tough to get a room right now because of the golf course biz. Silvers

Thanks both of you. Orry, I would appreciate a heads up on the name of the hotel you mention in Montrose. My email is wilmrph@verizon.net Silvers, thanks for the 81 information. You said it the way I thought it was. Mapquest can be a potential snakebite sometimes. Bill Murphy

Be aware that Ernie's location is about 25 - 30 min. south of Vestal, NY, a suburb of Binghamton. There are 100's of hotels in the Binghamton - Johnson City - Vestal area, not much of anything other than Scranton-esque lodgings to the east of Ernie's off I-81. Worth looking into. KBM

Any campgrounds nearby? Thought I might sleep in the truck. Now you know I'm not Mr. Buck$.

Rabbit, I'd recommend Salt Springs State Park. It's near Montrose, fairly close to Hidden Hollow. A nice location and nearby town if you want to do some eateries. Silvers http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/saltsprings.aspx
