I'm thinking most of the country is iced in at the moment so maybe someone can solve this riddle.

A Joseph Harkom sidelock 16ga. with "London proof marks"??? Any idea as to the history of this precious double?

Here's my guess: It was made in London on a Birmingham-supplied/Scott action.

I don't think it's a best-quality Harkom sidelock. It appears to be a step down from this:

Does it say Harkom on the lockplates or on the bottom of the action? What about on the bbls?

From the proofmarks, looks to have been made between 1904-25. No chamber length in inches, which was required after 1925. Then a very modern reproof (the "STD" has only been used since 2005, and it means standard CIP proof), still with the original 2 1/2" (65mm) chambers.

Interesting. So it looks like it might be their top-grade, sidelock shotgun. Guess I was wrong.

Harkom may have made it and had it proofed in London.

I think Dickson did that with a lot of their guns - especially the Round Actions.

I'll look into it some more to see what I can figure out.

Nice looking gun, and I'm sure it's rare in a 16g.

Thanks for sharing.

BTW: I've seen a few Harkom sidelocks with original Boss single triggers. I've wondered if Harkom and Boss (or John Robertson) had some kind of relationship.

Both Webley and Scott and {Hollis} Bentley and Playfair made guns for the trade with those fences. It does look like a screw grip, so probably Webley and Scott.

I don't think that's a Webley "screw Grip "lever . Seen several makes filed up like that , I think it was a trend at the time ,

Gunman, you have seen infinitely more examples than I have. I thought the barrel extension slot coming back to the top lever looked like the three or four screw grips I have owned. A couple of those had the same fence treatment.

I know a lot of the screw grips have a small "grub screw" that engages the large screw in the top lever (which this gun does not have). But was that a characteristic of ALL screw grips??
