In my mind reading about the Major it was a higher grade Syracuse Lefever.Nothing wrong with a nitro special.I have owned several and shot a lot of game with them. Bobby

On the issue of weight, the popular opinion is that the Ithaca is a clunker. Quite the opposite is true. Seen in hand, it is readily apparent that is quite a small frame - In almost every measure it is shorter, narrower, and not as tall as its contemporaries. Although Ithaca was a mass-marketer, they had the ability to build the guns up or down in weight, to the customer's desires. It's not Ithaca's light guns that surprise me, but the heavy ones.

Can't say I've ever handled a really light NID 20ga (and I've handled quite a few) compared to the Foxes. But the design did lend itself to much lighter guns. My Ithaca Classic Doubles 4E, with a beavertail, is exactly an ounce lighter than my ejector Sterlingworth. (5/13 1/2 to 5/14 1/2). Both the same overall length, both 26" barrels.
