Another post is hashing out the perplexities of gun oil. It got me to thinking that aside from the rust prevention aspect, just how often do the internal workings of a gun really need to be lubricated? While oil is certainly a nice idea, a casual observation would be that a decently made gun will give excellent service for a very, very long time without frequent oiling. Think of all the competition guns out there that go tens of thousands of rounds between oil changes with nary an incident, and can do this ten times over.

lubrication reduces friction. Friction causes wear. Modern guns do not need to be cleaned and oiled all that often but proper maintenance and lubrication will retard wear. If you put many thousands of rounds through a gun per year, a C&O at the end of the season is most likely cheap insurance.

Kreighoff wants to see the gun once a year to clean, oil, and inspect and repair worn parts. I waited for 10 years, about 100,000 rounds, and had NO problems. Of cpurse K-80 is a very good quality gun.

Once every hundred years, whether it needs it or not.
If you drop in the lake or get caught in a rainstorm then it should be immediately dried, then disassembled, cleaned and oiled.

on a hunting sxs o/u once every 50 years or so for the internals unless it gets rained on or dropped in water....the barrels, hinge, action lock, probably mid season and end of season.... but I do tend to push a patch through the barrels after a hunt just to get the weed seeds out....

When I buy a vintage double it gets done, clean and lube, just so I know it is clean and everything is hunky dory inside. Unless it develops an internal problem, or we go in the drink, it may not get done again by me.

Has any one used a dry film type lubricant? I have a spray on moly dry film lube that goes on like paint. Moly would bond with the metal and always be there. Being dry it wouldn't collect the grit that grease and oil do. Any thoughts?

Amazing!
You buy a car , the wife a car , the kids a few cars , and you pay for tyres and servicing regularly.
You have a passion, a calling , an escape, and you hardly if ever get it serviced! Shame on you.
Guns need servicing annually. A clean and lubrication probably will not cost $150.
