I have happened upon a nice W.W. Greener at a local shop. However, at sometime in the past it was restocked. I suppose the restocking was more . . . modern. It now sports a Monte Carlo comb, white line spacers, and a ventilated recoil pad.

I've never had a gun restocked, other than changing out the stock on my modern Beretta sporting clays gun (which was easy enough). I don't even know what the ballpark would be for a Greener, especially one with the side safety. $1000?

More, much more. I think a good stocker would be looking for near three times that much. You might be able to find someone for less but you get what you pay for and a good stocker will have a backlog for up to a year or more.

KY Jon is correct. The most difficult part will be finding anyone who is willing and capable of stocking a side safety gun. $3k minimum by the craftsman that I am aware of who could do this. Can you take down the comb and replace the pad? Can always do a butt transplant instead of a full restock.
Regards,
Jeff

Butt transplant is a good idea, full restock plan on about $4,000 including the wood and getting fitted. Plan on extra for leather covered pad or skeleton butt also.

You might find cheaper but you pay for what you get.

If the current stock is inletted and headed up properly and of good quality, perhaps it can be remodeled into a more classic design that fits you.

This would by my first thought, if the wood is done reasonably well, you might be able to salvage whats there removing the white line spacers and but pad and fitting a leather covered or a silvers original pad, and reshaping the stock to and having the checkering cut in a period correct manner, shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks (to American for a Brit to say that ). The gun simply might not be worth spending thousands on and if you can make a vast improvement without breaking the bank your doing well in my view.

Secondly is the but transplant but this is only really worth bothering with if the Inletting, choice of wood, and condition of the head of the stock is well made to begin with.

If you can afford the restock or if money is no object just dive in, you will end up with a gun that looks how it should and handles how it should and fits you if its done well, and it should last several lifetimes.

Edit to add, pictures of the gun in question could help with an assessment of weather the first suggestion is possible.

My Ferlach trained stocker, living here in Slovenia, would do a Greener restock for less than $1000; waiting period is 1-2 months.

With kind regards,
Jani

How difficult is it to get a gun in and out of Slovenia? I have an acquaintance who ships guns to Italy for restocking. Big name shops there do it for about half of what it costs in the states and much, much faster. Shipping and insuring both ways is at least $1000, but for a side lock is worth it.

Jeff

Instead of asking people to speculate on the cost of restocking, which not contact some stock crafters and ask.

Brilliant idea and something I had not even considered. Some bending, reshaping, and a new pad would go a long way.
