I have a WC Scott 28ga sxs. The S/N dates the gun to 1978. On the trigger plate it says Orvis Best Gun. On the right barrel it says WC Scott and Son (Gunmakers)LTD Birmingham. Cased. What is strange is that the action is rounded, unlike a 700 series. Any idea what model it is? I have never seen another one like it. I am going to contact Orvis and see if they have any info as well. http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/trilogymac/slideshow/WC%20Scott%2028gaThanks!

The receiver looks like an unadorned Webley & Scott 500, but according to the info I have, those were long out of production by 1978. A real mystery, and definitely not a 700 series gun.

Sorry Skeettx, Thanks for posting Got a bit lazy Here are the rest Bro Larry, Ya know, I told you 1978. I found that info on a site showing years of MFG for WC Scott. Maybe the site was in error. The serial # is 146xxx. You can see she's no safe queen. Traveled many a mile on foot with the old girl.

Skeettx, I saw that one during my search. I called John Rano, But he was gone for the day. I'll try again tomorrow.
Wouldn't take double that for mine! To many good memories and my boy loves it. It will be in the family for a long time.

That's a nice filed rib. Looks like a Churchill rib. Are the barrels 25"? Pretty gun.

Buzz, Good evening. They are 25". I always though they were 26" but I just put a tape on them. Its my favorite quail gun. Hasn't been shot in years.

Bill--The Scott book agrees with your date, although their chart is an estimate--but I think probably not far off.

What I have here is from Crawford & Whatley's book on W.C.Scott.
Four special versions of the Model 700 were designed for the American market. The Model 710, of which only nine were made from 1966 to 1970, was the top quality boxlock (Model 701) in 28 bore. Models 712 (12 bore), 720 (20 bore), and 728 (28 bore) were medium grade guns, recognizable by their distinct serial number: Model 712 (712201 to 712225), Model 720 (720000 to 720229, and Model 728 (728000 to 728215). A few Model 701 and 702 guns were numbered in special ranges during the later 1970's (701000 to 701028 and 702000 to 702048), but most were numbered in the 121000 through 146000 range.
Various other bits of non-relevant information then it comes to the last sentence in that chapter. 'The last double gun made by Webley & Scott was a 16 bore model 701 (No. 146243).'
The company was sold and re-formed as W.C.Scott in 1980. Lagopus.....
