I've been using WD-40 for decades. Never had it gum up on anything. It's served me well.

If you put WD-40 on thick and leave it, it will dry to a gummy residue. So will most light petroleum distillates. It is a solvent for itself, so if you spray and wipe off the excess no buildup will occur. It was all I used on everything for over 20 years before I got smarter, became a member of the Society Lubrication Engineers, and found it is not the greatest lubricant. In spite of that, all of those guns survived quite nicely. That is one reason why I find testimonials of people using a product for 5 or 10 years and not having any issues less than earth shattering.
