It can be welded and heat treated but you really need to know what kind of rod you are adding and some knowledge of the parent metal really helps, as does a world class welder. I'm not near good enough at welding to do these types of repairs but I use a great craftsman with vast knowledge of both metalurgy and firearms. PM me if you want his name Bobby.
