I am looking at a Spanish SxS which has a 16" LOP.
I only need a 14 1/4" LOP. How badly does it affect the
center balance to remove 1 3/4"?
I don't want to ruin an expensive gun and reduce the value by modifying it.

16 inch length of pull is unusual. Is it possible the gun has been restocked ? If so, your shortening worry may not come into play.

One thing you may look at before you commit to buy it would be the size of the butt where you are planning to cut it off to. If the butt is currently 5-5&1/2" like they typically are, you could end up with something quite small with nearly 2" of lop removed.

You'll need to consider where the balance point is now. If it is currently well behind the pin, and considering the remaining butt size as SKB points out, you may be ok.

The depth of the butt you end up with after shortening is as SKB said the real issue here.
If you want a checkered butt you can add weight to the butt to regain the original balance point by drilling the butt, adding lead weights & then plugging the holes & re checkering or you can fit a recoil pad which depending on the pad used may compensate for the weight of the wood removed.

I have seen some spanish built SxS guns with very long LOPs before. But not that long.

are you measuring from the front trigger to the end of the stock?
keep it simple and keep it safe...

If the gun does not fit then some imaginary "balance point" is going to be of precious little consequence.

Thanks for all the input.
My joke is that Cabela's would need to find all interested parties who are left handed and height above 6'6" to sell the gun to.
One reliable source suggested a re-stock which would run around $5.5K. Not worth the cost and trouble in my opinion and still have a gun that wouldn't be worth the $13K asking. It is a pretty SxS though.
I will have to visit the factory this year. When I drove by last year in Elgoibar it was lunch time and all the gun Mfgrs. were closed as they should be for civilized craftsmen.
