The crack is most often internal. You have to remove the stock to find if one exist. Recoil acts like a wedge and splits the stock at the head. Repaired with a metal staple the crack gives no future problems. If you do a search here you will find several good post with great pictures of the repair.
Be careful Remington 1894's are very addictive. Well made and become solid shooters when brought back to mechanical shape. I guess Remington stopped production before cost cutting measures made their doubles cheaper and less well fitting. They did end production about 30 years before the others gave up production.
