My memory (74) remembers a screw that allows you to move and set the top lever and locking bolt. It looks right at you when you take the floor plate off. Don't bugger the screws and don't go farther than removing the floor plate. leave the wood in place.

You can make that adjustment on a Flues but it may affect the function of the automatic safety feature; the bolt may no longer push the safety rod/lever far enough rearward for the pin to block the triggers. Don't ask me how I know....

Worse case you move it back or loose the auto safety? Does the safety still work in manual ? And most of the lessons learned the hard way are the best. That's what I tell myself every time and about half the times I am right.

Checking for "off face" does not mean an .005 shim cannot be inserted in the breech face. It means that the gun will not close with an .005 (or preferably less) shim in the breech. I don't know what the thickness is, but it isn't trying to insert the shim after the gun is closed.

Eightbore is right. Off face can only be measured accurately by trying to close a double with a shim in place. And both barrels should be tested because using the shim test one barrel could indicate it is off face but the other barrel might be solidly on face. The wiggle test mentioned earlier is a poor gauge because if the barrel lug is a snug fit into the action recess it might show no movement side to side but still be off face. On face means the breech ends of the barrels are smack up against the face of the action.

Joe, doesn't it depend entirely if you are buying or selling ? Daryl, that is a very astute observation obviously born from many years being on both sides of the negotiating table. I am amazed at the phenomenon of how much a gun can change as it hovers over the table. Perhaps it is a gravitational influence as the gun changes hands?
