Oh, no! That shoots a hole in my entire plan. I may end up having to figure out a way to bring a pump gun after all. I guess the Springfield's out now too, since the courts ruled in favor of Mauser.

Claus Lind Christensen is the sea duck guy in Denmark. Very into it and has an entire website dedicated to it. I know he uses what looks to be a Browning O/U. (not the gun below in the picture. Have seen pictures of just the gun and birds.) His website is: http://www.strandoghavjagt.dk

Those pictures look like a great place to NOT bring a fine gun. Might 'wanna consider a Mossberg 500 with a battleship grey paint job, and leave the double for hunting hickory grouse and capercalie. When I was last in Europe, the authorities were 'kinda funny about rifles in 308, 223, 30-06 and sundry other military calibers. Kinda funny translating to don't even think about it.

What exactly is wrong with a Ruger Red Label??? It is the answer to all of your concerns, its tough, can shoot steel through it and it's an American built double!!! Buy one and have it re-stocked and you'll still be under $5,000 and have a beautiful firearm. Forget all that other crap the Red Label is what you need!!!

Don't know why I didn't think about a Red Label. It should indeed fill your needs. Nice guns. Handle and shoot well and they are strong. And, you won't get concerned taking it out in the duck boad on the open seas in Holland. Regards, Jake

If European Sea Ducks are anything like American Sea Ducks, I wouldn't try them with anything less that a 12 ga with tungsten matrix (my personal preference to Bismuth). These birds teach Canada Geese about tough in their spare time.
Salt water is an even greater equalizer than Col. Colt's pistol; it reduces everything to rust given any chance. If they allow a plugged pump gun or auto, I would go with a Remington 870 or 1100 (a layout boat may not be the best environment if you are not used to a pump) and you can take it apart and wash the salt out down to the last bolt, pin, and/or washer. For doubles, a Stevens 311 worked well for me, and I used a lot of WD-40 before it became unfashionable, and it had no rust on it and functioned perfectly when I finally sold it. If you are an O/U rather than a SxS guy, I can't think of a better American candidate than a Red Label.
I would concentrate on a shotgun you are comfortable with and borrow a rifle if the opportunity presents.

I think there is a plastic stocked, titanium nitride plated Red Label for the waterfowler, which, would fit the bill for salt water hunting.
It is ugly as homemade sin however, and a pretty good chance exists that the Danes would stop you at the airport, and ask you to leave and never return.
But, it would work.
