What a shame. It's as bad as a torched gun. Do people really think a rotary tool will produce the same effect as original? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=492823230
I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

It certainly looks to me like it was done with one of those pneumatic gravers.

Daryl, Are you sure? What would cut like that? I'd go with the pneumatic opinion, but I thought that they cut much more evenly. If you blow up the picture, it almost looks kind'a like a Bulino effect, with it being a series of dots.
I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

For what that gun cost new, it was most likely roll stamped.

The seller's crappy photography is highlighting the stippled background of the engraving. As Daryl stated, It's not recut.
No doubt this will go on to become a 20 page discussion.

Meriden factory original. Not the best pictures,,kind of grainy (if that's the term),,but that's what you got on a Meriden and a lot of other guns of that period. Not too bad considering the cabbage patch engraving patterns on some of the other name brand guns of the time.
Wm Gough did engrave some of their highest grades. I had one at one time that's now pictured on one of the Meriden F/A sites.
