How would that engraving be cut? Was it Chased? What would create all the small "point marks"? Or, is it an optical illusion caused by poor photography?

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

I think Dewey mention that type of engraving background shading is likely considered stippling. You probably have to wade through misc., but a search of 'metal stippling punches' might give some idea.

It looks to me like the lockplates have been aftermarket blued. Original finish was color casehardening. That may account for some of the appearance confusion. The engraving is typical of the lower 50s grades of that era .

The crappy photos are causing a lot of confusion here. This is cross-hatched background work. It is a quick way to background inexpensive engraving. It is cut with a V graver and looks kind of like checkering. If you zoom in on photo number 7, you can see the straight lines. Stippled backgrounds are very random and fine in appearance. Punched dot backgrounds do not create the straight lines, seen in photo number 7.

no i think it is a punch back ground with a sharp small square punch.cross hatch is with a liner, single point,or a tool made by striking annealed tool steel two directions on a single cut file to make a matting tool.it is hard to tell. i have seen very consistent dot and punch backgrounds

I still think the line engraving (NOT the stippled background) looks like it was chased with a pneumatic graver. The lines cut are obviously 'stuttered'.

The "stutters" are caused by the hammer blows to the chisel and are quite original. If the scrolls had been cut with a modern pneumatic powered engraver, the lines would be smooth and bright since the air tool delivers many more blows "per second" than a human hand can accomplish.

You are incorrect, regardless of your opinion.
