Building from scratch, refinishing, or just a simple repair of a Double Gun or other sporting firearm in an appropriate and proper manner is a true talent.
I encourage you to share your DIY gunsmithing experiences and accomplishments with rest of us who sadly are lacking those abilities.
Thank you all for your participation.
PS - Don't forget to tell us about your tools and fixtures too...I love gadgets!

I hope this is the kind of thing you want to see There is a back story to it, one of the subjects I teach is fire lighting and I want to show the kids as many ways as possible to go about it. I tried to buy a flintlock tinder lighter kit but no one seems to sell them any more, decided to build my own, first I did a bit of Googling for ideas and came across pictures of, what was a common practice way back when, once the barrel was unsafe to use pistols were converted to tinder lighters. There was one picture that came up that really appealed to me where the barrel was slit and hinged! As I also do pirate birthday parties I realised I could hit both sessions with one piece of kit. I purchased the lock and the basic trigger guard, the rest I did myself. I have got it to the point you see, trial assembled ready for a bit more fetttling, over Christmas I will hopefully get it finished. I need to sort out the spill holder and some char rope then see if it works. As all my machine tools are still in storage this was accomplished with basic hand tools and elbow grease.

There doesn't seem to be that much interest in the above but here is the finished item and how it works. https://vimeo.com/150258739

Well done! It looks as though the spi9ll snuffer was made from a rimmed cartridge case. Am I right?

I love tinkering with the tattered old relics that I'm drawn too yet I'd forgotten all about this site. I'd wondered why the main site had become so boring, now I know. The things I'm interested in are here.

Really a neat project. I am encouraged as much by this as I am discouraged by those individuals w/o vision or interest in making "things".

A short story, my very first double was a very nice Fox AE 16 ga. with 30" barrels. It was a complete gun but it had an 11" stock(cut for a small person) and stenciled barrels,... phone number on one barrel and address on the other. I bartered with the smith and he sold it to me at a decent price. I had the barrels done by my smith and Wenig replaced the stock about 20 years ago. I asked Wenig to finish the stock but ship it to me after final sanding. I wanted to finish the stock and forend myself. This started my journey in finishing stocks. I am really interested in the many ways people finish wood. I read a thread not to long ago in this forum where there was a full blown discussion on the varied ways you folks finish stocks. Wow are there a lot. Along with the finishing aspect, there are so many repair tricks you guys have, filling, steaming, bending, blending and staining/coloring, just to mention a few. That's what I want to hear about. So if you have a trick, a formula, blending. a novel top coat, something to really waterproof wood or anything else, I'd like to hear about it. I mention the waterproofing of wood, because a very good friend of mine who used to build small speed boats as a hobby, used xylene on the wood before he applied the fiberglass and resin. That made the wood much more waterproof. So with that information, I've been messing with undercoats to help waterproof the stock without affecting the final finish. Any suggestions, comments?

you might have already seen this, but just in case you missed it and are interested-- I put together a compilation of sorts of all the traditional finish information on DGJ that I could find. Others have made significant contributions (beyond the original sharing of info) with suggestions for additions and revisions. The second half of the document is a collection of finishes that are from books, articles, etc. I'm always looking for things to add or revise, so please share if you have info. I should note that what I've put together is only about non-poly finishes. there are one or two mentions of synthetic finishes but only in passing. It is definitely not a treatise on general gun stock finishing

Sorry Jim I've been absent for awhile. Clicking on your "compilation" made my computer stall tonight. It may be my fault so will try in the morning. Thanks Carl
