Kyle:

I have been doing this for 43 years, and I can tell you that people have never sent me unlicensed machine guns, short bbl shotguns, and short bbl rifles. What just dropping them in the mail and sending to him?

What a bunch of shuck and jive. ( You really believe this story?)

In a word, yes.

Joe Blow asks the shop to receive a shotgun from his father. Shop says yes, gun comes in and has ten inch barrels apparently cut with a hacksaw. Joe Blow II asks the shop to receive a family heirloom WWII pistol. When the gun arrives it's a MP-40. And so on.

In terms of "shuck and jive", what you believe is your business and not something in which I have an interest.

Well, I was an FFL holder for only about 25 years, and I never ran into any of that. Never had a problem with GunBroker either, nor do I expect them to do anything other than provide a forum where buys and sellers can meet. I have never bought anything, either for myself or anyone else, that I did not call and talk to the seller first. Based on that conversation, I did not pursue several purchases. One guy was mad because it was a specific gun he had been looking for, but I said sorry, use another FFL. Gun arrived with a broken stock and was not the specific gun he wanted.

I try not to do transfers. When I do I charge $35 for good customers and friends. It is not a money maker for me. I stop what I am doing, sign for the gun, unpack the Mickey Mouse packing, check for damage, check the serial number, log it in my book, call customer talk about his dog, the crapy weather, latest hunting trip, latest fishing trip, some other gun he wants my opinion on buying from someone else and set up a time for him to pick up the gun. Customer may or may not show up at set time and date. If he does we talk about his dog, the crapy weather, latest hunting trip, latest fishing trip, some other gun he wants my opinion on buying from someone else then he inspects the gun decides if he wants to keep and fills out the 4473. I call it in this can take any where from 2 min for a proceed to an hour for hold time for further review if the trans action results in a delay. a new appointment will be needed when it is approved. If the customer does not want it then we need to arrange for an FFL to ship it back to. If it arrives damaged or gets damaged on the return trip it can really get fun.

A shop that has clerks waiting around for customers would see it different than someone that could be working at a bench billing time.

So Mark what have you got against the darn dog? With some men that is likely the only friend they have at home. I understand a one time event like you describe is not a money maker at all and when things go sideways they are never worth the few dollars they bring in. Still give the dog a break. You deal with the owner few a few minutes the dog has to live with him 24/7. Talk about a dogs life.

Most of you guys are missing the real reason a lot of FFL's do not want to receive a gun from anyone other than an FFL….. What do you suppose happens when the buyer during his 3 day inspection decides he doesn't want the gun?????

If you ask ATF they will tell you it cannot be returned to the owner it must be shipped to an FFL…….A real mess.

No one is getting rich receiving guns for $35 to $50 buck come on guys.

Sorry Mark. I know that you are a good guy. But your post did leave you wide open. And I like dogs and kids but don't care to talk about either too much.

People don't understand that thirty five bucks is a lot when you spend it but not when you earn it. It might take you an hour to do everything under the best circumstances and when you are trying to get other things done it just can screw up several hours. Ten minutes here, twenty there and your train of thought is broken on the real task you are doing.

Why do you have to return it to an FFL? The way I read the regs you do not. A gunsmith or manufacturer can return the same firearm directly. Same thing.
