The top gun looks to have been restored. I base this on the slightly rounded edges of the forend wood where it meets the forend iron and literally NO wear at all to areas of the frame that otherwise might even show a bit of polishing by handling.
The bottom gun looks all original to me with minimal handling.

I say #1 is original due to the tone of the wood and there is slight bluing loss on the barrels right next to the breech. That will happen just from in and out of a gun case over time. The #2 gun shows polishing of the barrel engraving on the engraving at the breech, it appears softened. The wood on #2 appears light in tone. OK Walt what's the answer??

OK, I'll join in. I think the wood on No. 1 does not look like original Ithaca finish or checkering . I cannot say on metal finishes.

OK, Thank you to all who participated. The number one gun is the "restored" gun. Number 2 has its original 1936 factory finish.

Just pure curiosity Walt, does that 'lighting issue' on the stock of #2 feel to the touch like a small direction change. It seems to have the look like someone thought the wood was a little too proud of the receiver.

Craigd, I don't have that gun any longer BUT It it wasn't observable until I got it under the lights. I could not get that 'shadow' out of the scene. There must be a slight change in the surface for that to occur. Number 2 has a very large stock, about like a Magnum 10 gauge. So--my guess, like yours, the stocker had to taper it a slightly to fit. The strange thing is it was not noticeable in regular room light?? Anyway, that's the story. I do not restore guns as a rule and was interested in folks thoughts on the case coloring match.

Thanks much Walt. Picture for picture, I think that is a very nice case color match. If I sent a picture and asked try to duplicate this, that would seem to be a huge success.
