It would seem that Carl/Karl Paubel of Pfarrstraße 3, Suhl was active from some time in the mid 1880s till right after WWI. I have strong suspicions that Karl Paubel married into the J. Funk family of gunmaking, who possibly along with a Schmidt mechanic, hung out his gunmaking shingle in 1854. J. Funk & Companie advertised as Exporte nach Rußland, England, U.S.A, which would explain the export/import type stamps. I'd also hazard a guess that Karl had a son by the name of August Paubel but may or may not have toted the ball for the concern. Either way, I'd guess August was born in the 1880s and was a master in his own right by WWI. I'd have to check the list of the fallen, but like Ernst Lindner, it is possible that August Paubel fell in fierce fighting in WWI:

If that was the case, Karl Paubel limbed along till he closed the concern.

Thank you Raimey for nice again sharing your information. I have attached pictures.I appears to be a quality 10 gauge hammer gun, with nice Damascus barrels that measure 32 1/2". I have posted pictures of the barrel flats and water table but I find no proof marks, only what appears to be a set of initials. Your thoughts as well as others is appreciated.

It's hard to possibly tell from the pictures but case color is excellent as well as the wood and barrel Damascus pattern.

Lovely Suhl bar in wood example. Looks to be same talented mechanics that were subcontractors to H.A. Lindner but I see no connection to Lindner nor Schoverling, Daly & Gales. I would assume that J. Funk & Co. had long established sourcing in Suhl & import connections to the U.S. of A. prior to Daly's arrival on the scene. Elegant adornment of the Prince of Wales grip, etc. Can you harzard a guess @ the script initials: HM? Probably from the mid 1880s.

raimey;
You or I one is missing something. I see the entire bottom of the frame in one pic, doesn't look like the bar in wood guns I am familiar with.

The initials could also possibly be SM. need to take and look at it with a magnafing glass. Thoughts on why no proof marks ?
