Found another book I'd recommend, but couldn't find it for a while in order to report on the details.

'Murder on Safari' by Elspeth Huxley, (1989). Right off the bat the detective protagonist, who has to go under cover as a PH, gets to go shopping to get himself properly outfitted before joining up with the safari where the crime occured! Interestingly, the gundealer/gunsmith's name is Capstick. Coincidence?
