No proofmarks is easy. German law did not require till April 1893, say 'bout 10 years after the example was completed.

I "Always" read your posts. Your knowledge of these guns is simply fantastic, that's why I couldn't understand why you said it was a bar-in-wood. Thought maybe I was missing something but it looked like a bar action to me.

Thanks guys for this additional information. How common are 10 gauges made in Suhl during this era? It seems like I'm not finding a lot of examples. Also how does one go about estimating a value on a gun such as this one where so little is known on the Gunmaker. How would the quality of this gun compare to some of the more known makers? Your opinions and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Well I purchased this gun and shot it yesterday. Chambers measure 2 7/8". I have attached a few more pictures, clearly the gun had little use. Weighs 10 lbs 7 oz. bores are very nice. I did notice the it is engaged on one lock and on the barrel SHUL PARUSSIA not PRUSSIA. Also on the bottom of the barrels the marked initials WS or SW. Depending on which way you look a it. I have signed up for the German gun forum. Hope fully I will get confirmation soon and can post pictures there. Thanks to all that have shared information so far.

Wow, 10-7 is a heavy gun to carry all day. Might be half the reason it is in so wonderful condition. The other being a short chamber 10 which saved it from 3 1/2" abuse. A lot of possibilities for use depending on hunting opertuniies where you are. Heck of a gun for a blocker in a pheasant field or in waterfowl hunting from a blind.

Jon, why do you call this "short-chambered"? By my reckoning, it's actually a "magnum," at least an "old magnum"! Is my memory faulty, or isn't the standard 10 guage chambering for that period 2 5/8" and the "magnum" 2 7/8".

I have a Remington 1889 hammer 10 guage made in '93 that is marked "Magnum" and has 2 7/8" chambers. I've always assumed that it was rechambered from 2 5/8" aftermarket because the "magnum" stamp doesn't look factory to me.

BTW the gun shown by the original poster is a very beautiful example of a hammer double, heavy or not! My guess is that nobody made it to "carry all day," just to tote to the waterfowl blind and blast away!

To me the long 10 is the mag is 3 1/2". I've seen 3", 2. 7/8" and 2 5/8". Might be others out there. Perhaps it would be better to think of regular and Roman candles or standard and super mags. Was not trying to belittle short as less than anything else. This is a very nice looking gun but I'd use it more if it was below nine and a half pounds and not above 10. I have a Barber-Lefever hammer, thumb opener which is well over ten pounds that I never use because it is too heavy to carry.

Not a gun I want to tote to far, but I shot it yesterday and the recoil was quit tame.
