Over dekes that 20 gauge load with the right gun would be awesome. Not a duck made that can take a one ounce load of number 4's at circa 30 yards and keep going.
A sea duck hunting buddy of mine would argue that with you, tut. I think you were probably referring to inland decoying, anyway. But, he has hunted ducks his whole life and swears that scoters are more tenacious of life than anything he has ever hunted. He says it is rare to kill one graveyard dead without needing a finishing shot on the water. I've not had the opportunity to try it, yet, so this is just secondhand information. BTW, he is the finest shot with a shotgun I have ever seen, and I've seen exhibition shooters up to and including Tim Bradley. Once saw this guy run a round of regulation skeet, 25 x 25, from the hip, on the run, in under 60 seconds, timed. Point is, poor shooting is not the reason he believes that.
