On the I-5 north out of Los Angeles about 50 miles, there's a mountain pass that tops at 4200 ft. Everytime we get snow on that road, it closes. Yet there is an army of snow clearing equipment. This is a piece of 'Super-Slab' freeway that has probably 4-5 lanes in each direction at the summit.

A little snow and the cars start sliding all over and there's almost always a pileup. Nobody slows down one bit and dimwits think they can go 80 mph on the snow and ice. They can. Just not in the direction they want to. Sn, as soon as they can shut it down, they do. Sometimes they'll run escorted batches thru at controlled speeds, because left to their own, the knuckleheads would kill themselves.

Chuck,

I'm familiar with that pass. A couple friends and I took a year off from college in 1975, worked into the fall and then took off to Mexico in Nov. Our 1st stop over was in Portland to visit a friend then on to San Francisco to visit the sister of one of my travel mates for Thanksgiving.

We were driving a Ford Courier and hit that pass a few days after Thanksgiving. There was probably about an inch, perhaps two inches of snow. We had almost clear sailing over the pass, because most of the cars had either slid off the road or were pulled over putting on chains. We appreciated the lack of vehicles on the road, but thought it a bit amazing that most all drivers were having such a hard time with that little amount of snow. It was a bit comical to us.

I've been over that pass a few times since, as recently as last Sept, but have never been over it in winter since 1975.

Sounds like you mean the Cajon Pass, just outside of San Bernardino. Fog causes big pileups there every so often, too.

Think he's referring to the Tejon Pass, south of Bakersfield.

Tejon pass, also known as the grapevine (for better reasons many years ago than now). 6 and 8 lanes of highway with people driving with their head up their butt, I crossed it a couple of years ago in a hard rain and witnessed several accidents, mostly single car caused by driving way too fast for the conditions and losing control on flooded pavement. You can imagine what would happen with snow and icy conditions.

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. I just turned 55 the other day and I'm 2 years, 3 months and 6 days away from leaving a job I've had for 33 years so far. And I can say the thought of moving to somewhere cheaper in retirement is ever present on my mind.

I moved here, to Vt, 30 years ago from the Eastern Shore of Md. Culture shock doesn't begin to describe what I went through, so the warnings about the same resonate with me.

For those of you thinking of moving to Vt, beware, there are many unanticipated costs of living here, decent cold weather clothes, snow removal equipment, heating, gas, and the cost in aggravation to anybody even remotely small gov't or libertarian.

The gun laws are great, as is access to good duck hunting. Bass fishing is great on Champlain. There is plenty to do in the winter.

Vt taxes every source of income possible, even at one time saying the Federal exemption on state income taxes on savings bonds doesn't apply here. If you've got it, they want it.

My wife and I don't have grand babies to anchor us here, and we've started looking at other states as possible retirement locales. Last year we drove through Ky. I loved western Ky, her, not so much. I think I would like Tenn, I know I would like SC, Georgia and Fla, but she can't do that much heat. I think I have her talked into selling the house (1450 sq ft ranch $5000 year in taxes) and driving around for 6 months or more to see what we like, where.

The advice about doing things while health still allows echos what the little voice in the back of my head keeps saying. Anybody have any advice on intelligently buying a motor home that I can tow behind my F-150? I've trailered plenty of boats, but know nothing of buying/towing a camper.
