Has anyone ever shot or used 1 oz loads for a 28? I inherited a case of 1 oz 7 1/2 shot ( white box AAs). I am a little leary shooting a ounce load out of my 28.

I have used them with great results. Years ago I used Winchester 1 oz. number 6's for ducks and 7 1/2 for dove and quail. My Christmas present when I was 12 was a Model 12 28 ga. with a case of number 6's. The next day I was happily using them in our duck blind. If they would let me shoot them over decoys I still be shooting them but steel shot ended my small bore duck hunting.
When I reload for upland game I'd rather have a faster 7/8 or even 3/4 ounce load and limit range of shots. The one ounce loads I have tried tend to be fairly slow, in the 1125 fps range and were adequate but not great in field conditions.

I've only used two loads in my 28, a Fiocchi #8 3/4oz at 1150, and a similar Fiocchi 7 1/2 load at 1300. The 1300 load gets your attention. The gun is 5 lbs, 12ozs or so. Sharp recoil. I'm not going out looking for 1 oz loads.
Best, Ted

I wouldn't sleep in the same room with 1 oz. loads for a 28 gauge. They are inefficient, high pressure, kick like hell, and I wouldn't treat any 28 gauge shotgun that way. Trade them for some good 3/4 oz. loads....if you have to shoot 1 oz. of shot, use a 16 gauge...or a 12

Approximately 20 years ago I shot a 28ga Parker Reproductions for 3 or 4 seasons as my grouse gun & I used the Winchester 1oz of 7 1/2 load almost exclusively. Despite what has been written about the 1oz 28ga being an inefficient load, the Winchester load gave good results on the pattern board & seemed to kill grouse well.
As previously mentioned, those loads were slow @ something <1100 fps but 20 yds was a long shot in the cover I was hunting & the grouse didn't seem to notice the loads were 150 fps slower than normal. I don't remember recoil being severe under hunting conditions either & the Parker Repo had the standard skeleton steel buttplate.
I don't disagree that 3/4oz or possibly the old Federal 7/8oz load makes more sense in a 28ga but I thought those Winchester 1oz loads worked very well.

I know for a fact, live pigeon shooters use them in the 28 gauge event.

What gun do you propose using for these loads?

I sometimes hunt with a married couple in Montana. She shoots 1oz of 7-1/2s through her little Merkel SxS. Her Merkel 28 is of post-war manufacture and made in West Germany.
I've seen her take huns, sharptails, and roosters with that combination of gun and shell many times. All taken over pointing dogs.
I am glad to be here.

I honestly can not see any point in shooting 1oz through a 28 gauge???? International Shooting disciplines shoot extremely testing targets using 7/8 of an ounce. The trend here is towards 21gram 12 bore cartridges which in the right hands prove to be extremely efficient. I personally prefer and shoot 3/4 ounce through my 28 bores.
