For me, it's easier to look ahead of the bird - where the gun is pointing. I'm 70, and damn, I just can't see the rings on a clay bird in the woods going 40 MPH though shadows and sunlight. Can't do it on a skeet field either. I just find it easier to look ahead and see the bird behind.
