I try not to get too worked up about it unless someone I trusted to do work on my guns does something stupid.
There are more people ignorant of good work than knowledgeable. They'll always be butchery. I see it all the time on new trucks on a forum I moderate.

Ed, I repeat a punch is never the proper way to fix a gun off face. Shim it if you must or build up the hook if you don't want to replace the pin. I know a skilled British smith who could "upset" metal to tighten a gun if a cheap repair was needed. But he never used a punch to make the gun look like it was swiss cheese.
Both of the guns I saw this weekend were guns which if not punched up and if on face in the current condition would have been in the 1000-1500 dollar range. With the punch marks, an educated buyer will never even make an offer. But it is not just those two you can see hundreds like them for sale. A punch is a nasty thing in an amateur or even professional hand.

mike: skill is developed from training and then lots of experience...
experience teaches one what to do and what not to do depending on circumstances...
what is your definition of skill?
keep it simple and keep it safe...

ky: agreed, a repair should look as little like a repair as skill and budget dictate...
as for off face, much is made of that subject...it is my understanding that a gun can be as much as .004 off face and still be a safe shooter...depending on the gun and the ammo.
keep it simple and keep it safe...

A gun is either on face, or it's not. If I can close it fully with a one thousandth inch feeler gauge in between - is it on face? If it's not on face and being shot, it's being wrecked.
Think about it.
As to skill, it's not just knowledge, it's ability.

Would you buy a gun from this man? hammers and punches in skilled hands can be economical and durable fixes for loose gun problems...to condemn the use of ancient hand tools for loose gun repair is sorta unrealistic. often peening and punching is the only cost effective solution to fixing minor gun problems...and please be aware that i do not speak from my own experience or skill level... watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXbrmmiSngw may i repeat, " hammers and punches in skilled hands.... ky: agreed, a repair should look as little like a repair as skill and budget dictate...
