I've long used the Scott blue shop paper towels for everything in the shop. But they make very poor cleaning patches, easily tearing apart when saturated with solvent. Recently, in the auto parts store, I saw a roll of Scott Pro paper towels right beside the old blue ones. Advertised as being solvent resistant and stronger. Well, I bought a roll and tried them out. They are great, almost equal to cloth patches in strength. I still use the old blue shop towels for most everything but the Scott Pro has become my "go to" bore cleaning patches. I like them better than cloth. Try it, you'll be happy.

The Pro will not tear apart as seen in this before and after photo:

All my patches come from a rag that says, "BVD", "Hanes", or, "Fruit of the Loom". It depends on which brand was on sale the previous Christmas, and ended up under the tree at my Mother's house on Christmas day.
I custom cut each one, so, I know they are perfect. I "season" them for a year or so, on my person, and by that time, they are everything proof.

TMI ... Ted

Joe I'm going to the auto parts store right away for some of these. I've been using Brawny paper towels to limited success.

I smell jealousy, the kind that happens when you didn't think of it first.

Perfectly suitable patch material, assuming they hit the wash machine for the last time just prior to being cut up.

I also use the blue towels for patches. Check this out, it's a video on how to make a dispenser from a shell box.

I'm with Ted, last year's Jockey shorts make great cleaning patches. When I first retired and was shooting a lot my cleaning needs almost exceeded supply, but 13 years down the road we have achieved equilibrium.

Now Joe, no disrespect intended, but all these worlds' greatest things, are quite similar to George L. Herter things. MKII

Go to the thrift store and buy old flannel sheets for a couple bucks. Cut em' up and you have patches for years. Flannel is great stuff.

I like 4x4 sponges. shop online for best prices. They come in several plys so get the thickest ones. Cheaper than gun cleaning patches and precut.
