I recently acquired a sidelock M. Ugarteburu. I have not been able to fine much information on this gun with the exception of a brief mention in Terry Wieland's Spanish Best. Anyone have any further information on this maker?

Nice gun but poorly cared for. I have been cleaning it up a bit and will probably keep it for a rain gun.

Thanks for any help.

Dennis

The guns of Martín Ugarteburu (MU) are seldom seen here in the USA, other than the occasional 10 gauge box lock or the model 108 entry level side lock. That’s a pity, since he did some really nice work

Like just about all of the Spanish, pre-DIARM, artisanal shotgun makers MU made shotguns to every price point at which a market existed. As with all the makers, his higher price point guns ran from outstanding to stunningly beautiful.

When I’m scanning the auctions for Spanish shotguns Martín Ugarteburu is a name at the top of my “most desirable” list. Unfortunately it’s also one of the names I’m least likely to see, as relatively few were imported into the US.

Congratulations, you have just scored a Good One.

They are seldom seen in the UK either, so I guess they may not have exported much.

Yes sir, we have come to the same conclusion. I'd add that I'm of the opinion that the relatively small size of MU, and its limited output, are also factors.

Looking purely at serial numbers (always risky with Spanish shotguns), it appears MU made about 12,500 guns during the period 1951 - 1968. That's an average of about 725 guns a year, all price points.

Thank you for the replies.

A bit more info. This a model 112. A 12 bore, 2 3/4". Barrels are 27" with chokes of .003 and .014. LOP is 14 1/4". Using Wieland's Spanish Best (1994) proof mark listing, it carries proof marks # 21, 25, 18, & 14.

Unfortunately pics are a bit more than I am capable of. The gun is cleaning up very nicely.

Thanks again.

Dennis
