Ted, you have the full pistol grip on your Nitro also, sweet!!!!  But not as sweet as your Darne.

Hi Ted and thanks for that info and picture. Steve was actually at Ron Peterson's picking up a "Darne that was not a Darne" as he put it. I forget exactly what he said about it but it was to be a project gun for him with stock refinish, etc. Although we had never previously met I knew him and his writings and adventures and also knew his picture with his long grey hair. Well, it was actually shorter than mine when I saw him and he said it was just now re-growing after having been removed for surgery! He seemed to be doing very well. A very nice person and one heck of an interesting guy to talk to!!!! I will give my report upon return from SD.

Thanks guys! Sorry for the lack of a pic... I would have posted one but she is disassembled at the moment. One annoying thing is that about every other screw was missing. I am going to an old hardware store / gun shop tomorrow to see what I can't pick up.  Everything looks pretty solid, except that chewed stock. I'm only $175 in so far, add some screws, and a once over from a gunsmith, hopefully I'll only be around $250. A new stock would be $90. I do feel like it is probably worth more than that, right? I feel like I haven't seen the ones in good condition (maybe 70% guns) sell for less than $500... does that sound right? A LGS has an excellent++ one (A grade I believe)... def considering selling it, saving a few more dollars, and picking it up instead. I baby my firearms, so it would have a long, easy life (though it would be out birding with me for sure). Strange that the only two ithaca sxs models around here are both 16 gauge lefever nitro specials!

Hmm. Well, it looks as if a sorta' POW stock was an option on a Nitro, so, that question of mine is partially answered.

I'm looking at your pictures, and thinking that is a pretty grim project. It looks like it would be easy to end up with a bunch of money in replacement parts, for a gun that might never be worth more than $200-$300. A lot would depend on how sound the barrels appear, how clean they are inside, and how many mechanical parts besides screws are missing, and how much you can do yourself, versus paying a pro to do it. It might actually bring more money to people looking for Nitro Special parts, you selling off the parts at an auction site to recover your investment.
Been there, bought the T-shirt, mailed the post card, done that. Think hard before you put more money into this gun.

It isn't really a POW (Prince of Wales) but, that is easier to type than "round knob"!
Not sure which I would prefer, guess I'm happy with what is on my gun.

When I put it together with the few screws I had, it would cock, lock (though the forearm wasn't fitting perfectly... maybe the one screw in the spring mechanism would affect that... not sure yet), both triggers would engage, fire, both firing pins appeared to be in a locked then forward position, etc.
I just spent a couple hours getting the rust off the barrel and the grime off of the stock. Looks better so far. Once I finish cleaning it up and getting it together, I will post some pics!

Ted Thank you... I think that is very fair advice. The bores are good, but the left one has a small ding in it that is visible from the bore. When I bring her to the smith, I'll ask about flattening it out. If it is not cheap, it may be a sell-as-is or part out job for sure.

Perry, It would appear that Mr. Bodio has been littering the board with his castoffs:  At the time he ordered his new Darne slug gun, the subject of the Double Gun Journal piece titled "21st Century Jungle Gun", I accepted an old (1946 vintage) R10 12 gauge he owned, in trade. Inspite of being the importer for Darne for a decade and a half, I never got around to ordering a gun for myself, and the restock of this gun, from a demi-pistolet to a straight stock, in St Etienne, while I watched, was as close as I got. Someone in the gun's past took out most of the choke, and gave it a backbore, but, I have used it with the Cylinder and Improved cylinder chokes it has now to good effect on pheasants and grouse since I got it finished, before 9/11. Importing guns and ammunition was a lot more fun, pre 9/11, but, I digress. I've used the gun a lot, the sling is particularly handy when you have an old dog, or, Father, that needs some help getting out of the woods. I would sling the Darne and carry my Dad's Silver Snipe for him, when he got tired, during the last few years of his life. I also had a Gordon that was still hunting at age 14, and a few times I carried him out of the woods, with the Darne slung. It was preferable to leaving either of them at home. I haven't spoken to Steve in a few months, he was running up against some health issues related to aging, and sold quite a few of his guns, but, was hunting more then either he or his doctors expected at that time. He was down to a Remington model 17, and a 16 gauge Halifax, last we spoke. He had quite a few rifles left at that time. I'll contact him later this week. I hope he is well. I haven't used it in a few seasons, but, I also own a 16 gauge Ithaca 37 pump, and they are a fine birdgun. Do enjoy your trip. Bring plenty of ammunition, or, a second 12 gauge gun. You can get 12 gauge ammunition at just about any gas station or small town hardware store. Best, Ted Ted, Darnes are going to need a new outdoor writer/promoter. Bodio is the most recent of several. Don Zutz also seemed to like Darnes, and French guns in general. I've never met Steve, nor corresponded with him. I heard second hand that his interest in falcons resulted in an attempt by Christopher Boyce--a scumbag traitor who spied for the Russians, made famous (or infamous) in the book and movie "The Falcon and the Snowman"--to get Bodio to write Boyce's biography. Story I heard was that Bodio turned him down, to which I say "Good for him!" Anyhow, if you get a chance, ask him if that story is true.
