One other thought maybe of interest, the barrel band is loose on the barrel and held tightly in place by the stock in-letting.

Krag 1902, I assume you mean the mag, any chance you can share the article or read it and see if there are any clues in it?

John Hearn is the only stockmaker I am aware of who could do the wrap around checkering at the pistol grip and end up with only the thin line separating the checkering on each side.

I have a rifle with a barrel marked Bliss Titus and another mark on top of the barrel indicating the maker as Roy Dunlap. The checkering on the pistol grip is the same wrap around pattern with the thin separating line, and I have always attributed it to John Hearn. There are examples of Hearn's work in Monty Kennedy's "Checkering and Carving of Gunstocks".

I'll see if I can scan the article (not my forte) if someone would volunteer to post it.

I think Hearns work was a notch or two above this, but I have not seen many examples. Jaeger was known to dangle his pistol grips as this one is.

I looked at MK's book for Hearn's work and the thing we should consider is in the book all his work is borderless while this is bordered work. Maybe nothing but should be considered.
