John Hearn is the only stockmaker I am aware of who could do the wrap around checkering at the pistol grip and end up with only the thin line separating the checkering on each side.
I have a rifle with a barrel marked Bliss Titus and another mark on top of the barrel indicating the maker as Roy Dunlap. The checkering on the pistol grip is the same wrap around pattern with the thin separating line, and I have always attributed it to John Hearn. There are examples of Hearn's work in Monty Kennedy's "Checkering and Carving of Gunstocks".
