Perry, I am acutely aware where my capabilities end so I do only that which I feel qualified to do and farm out the really clever stuff to outworkers who are more qualified than I. Probably, 'as it ever was' in the British gun trade. Work to your strengths. I concentrate on the aesthetics (pins, blacking, browning, stock finishing, action regulation and cases) and get the barrel lapping, jointing and proof work done by a specialist. As one of my colleagues in the trade put it: I do 'pretty', they do 'safe'! However, the 'pretty' can be very much more time consuming than the 'safe' so I possibly invest 5-10 times as much time in a project than the really important guys!

Stan: At first I thought it was made as original but on VERY close inspection I think I could detect a forged weld just beyond the first screw hole. There is definitely no brazed scarf joint which I would have expected if the extension was a repair. The metal of the 'extra' portion is a little different in grain structure and finish from the rest of the top tang but the engraving matches perfectly. My guess is that it was extended at the 'in the white' stage and then finished off and engraved in one piece. Is a "forged weld" what you Limeys call what we in the Colonies call a "fusion weld"- ie" no filler added, only parent metal used. Not a TIG, and no brassy color (sorry, old chap- make that "colour", righto?) to show a braze line, sans the black flux "pimple"- assume it is close to our AISI 1018 mild steel in analysis, righto?? Toby, I am not even qualified to do pretty!! The best I can do is "wipe and oil"!!! My admiration knows no bounds for those like you who have such talent. I will patiently wait for you to post pictures of the finished product!

RWTF: Yes, a 'fusion weld' with no filler added. Much the same as damascus barrels were made: heat and the clever use of a hammer.
