Clear design objectives help. Here is an attempt to build a spartan SXS, neither boxlock nor sidelock, but offering the feel of a best gun at low cost:

Bear in mind this is a PLASTIC prototype. Some who saw it assumed it was a working gun and went on a rant crticising it as if it were a finished product offered for sale. Some details, like the opening lever and monobloc are test ideas.

The design process starts with three basics, the barrels axes, the steel characeristics and the pressure curve of the load to be used. Everything follows from there. The action is fitted to the barrels, in the design stage, even though the barrels are the "consumable" part during the gun's service life. Sounds mysterious but it isn't.

The suggestion that taking an existing gun and copying it is probably the best idea and on reflection to my earlier post I was going to propose just that had others not beaten me to it.
Even so please take into consideration the tolerances allowed for the time it was made and also the amount of hand work . This would be reflected in differences of several thousands of an inch in components and variants from a datum point which in machining an action is a vital starting point .

If you are going to go through this tough project, why limit yourself to sidelock or boxlock of an existing design. If you are going to do it you might as well go for something you want but cannot find either ready made or on order. I doubt that any drawings will come up, the traditional makers did not use them, preferring gauges and test plugs instead. You will have to either draw or 3D scan yourself I reckon.

One design that comes to mind is the Alex Martin Ribless. I so wish someone would offer a ribless SXS with thin wall chokes and monobloc barrels.

ALso, go for the boxlock, the sidelock has too many bits and will be hell to stock as a first time project. Also consider features such as a stock bolt which will simplify stocking.

And finally, look at sources of ready made parts, like barrels, and internal bits, forend irons etc. In Italy there is Omps, the supplier of bits to the gun trade, there must be something similar in Spain.
