It was almost sorcery that we located the guns because the capsize was in a snow squall an hour before daylight and our only guidance was from notions of wind direction, time in water and where we came ashore.
In both cases---the capsize and recovery---familiarity with boats, the water, weather and diving counted for naught and the outcomes were in good measure plain good luck. We were stupid. Experience can bite. End of story.
