John Amber wrote about his Purdey and a rifle that was made with a crossover stock in the Gun Digest. The Purdey may have been offered at his estate auction, but I think the auction predated my eye problem. I bid on his Famars Castore and his early Perazzi and was outbid on both. I saw the Castore at a show a few years later, but it was even more overpriced. I have tried to buy the Purdey since then, but the owner is not selling. It has some problems about a bulge at the chamber.

Having worked with a good friend who lost the vision in his right eye, and previously had a pace-maker installed in his left chest, he first tried an off-set front bead, and he found he could shoot well on clays, he could not hit wild birds; he just could not line up the sight and still look at the bird. My friend could not change over to shoot left handed due to his pace-maker in his left shoulder. I worked with him and made three cross-over stocks, first an 870 Remington pump to kind of "test the water", and finding it worked well for him, I made a cross-over stock for a Beretta 16 Ga. O/U, and finally for a Perazzi O/U 20 Ga. I do feel that if one can, one should change over and shoot from the opposite shoulder. But not all people can due this I guess. The problem is if you need a cross-over, you are limited to guns you can shoot. I do know of one very talented shooter who switched to left handed shooting when it was discover he had a left master eye when he was in his early teens, an he was always someone you had to beat at trap and Olympic bunker shoots. It is not easy to make a cross-over stock and fit it to the shooter. Here, fitting it the key element.

This is a FWIW, but I used to shoot with a guy who went through the same thing. His approach was to learn to shoot left-handed. It was very painful to watch at first, but within about three months he was doing pretty well. He shot once or twice a week, about a hundred birds at a crack, and had the attitude that it was going to work, hell or high water. He had been a good shooter before and a year later he was a good shooter again.

There was a trap shooter at our club that lost sight in his right eye. After losing sight in his right eye he continued to shoot right handed teaching himself the correct sight picture. He was no slouch either and continued to win tourney's. Unfortunately he had to discontinue shooting due to a heart ailment.

How about this one? You could use it with either eye...

bbman, feel free to pass the link on in that case - I would love to see it go to a site member and actually be put to use rather than relegated to the curios cabinet.
Fin, that is an interesting contraption indeed. Ha.

A friend who is gunmaker, lost sight on his right eye. He built a Scope mounting for his Drilling and other guns. Of course you could make a similar construction with a red dot sight for example on a gun. Main point, you need not alter the stock of your guns. Cheers, Gunwolf
