My GUESS is outsourced. The engraving style doesn't seem to match contemporary Smith work. Other than the later Eagle grade, were any Smiths stippled?
Like jawjadawg, I wish it were mine.

The dog engraving does not look like Hunter Arms engraving, and I have never seen a rabbit on one. The checkering looks recut and looks sharp at the points and should be flat topped like the No.00. Lots of if's.

I wish it were mine. My first quick glance made me think B grade Baker. My thought as well.

Why Ed... so you can fantasize about torching them?

would of had to start out as a grade 1 or lower as it doesn't have the pointed bolsters or whatever they are called on the top of the receiver that are present on grade 2 or higher graded smiths of that era....

My guess is that it is actually a higher grade gun, and the description in the DGJ Index and Reader was a typo. I can understand the "never say never" explanation because I have seen the same with Lefevers, but I have never once seen an O grade L.C. Smith with anything more than simple border engraving around the lock plates.
