My GUESS is outsourced. The engraving style doesn't seem to match contemporary Smith work. Other than the later Eagle grade, were any Smiths stippled?

Like jawjadawg, I wish it were mine.

The dog engraving does not look like Hunter Arms engraving, and I have never seen a rabbit on one. The checkering looks recut and looks sharp at the points and should be flat topped like the No.00.
Lots of if's.

would of had to start out as a grade 1 or lower as it doesn't have the pointed bolsters or whatever they are called on the top of the receiver that are present on grade 2 or higher graded smiths of that era....

My guess is that it is actually a higher grade gun, and the description in the DGJ Index and Reader was a typo. I can understand the "never say never" explanation because I have seen the same with Lefevers, but I have never once seen an O grade L.C. Smith with anything more than simple border engraving around the lock plates.
