The guns a beauty - I remember a post on the Nitroexpress forums from someone who was looking to load for a double pinfire rifle it seems his was a 20 bore though.

Might be some information of use here

Thanks to all. Assuming I start out with a round ball, should the ball diameter be slightly less the bore[groove] diameter, but slightly more that the land diameter ?

Berrien, here's a few more pics coming one at a time.

Demonwolf, thanks for the interesting article. Now, if I could find such provenance on this gun. Not likely, I am sure.

Daryl, a patched round ball is always under bore diameter, but in a cartridge gun, I would think you would want something of at least groove diameter, to get proper engagement with the rifling. It is claimed that black powder will upset a slightly undersized lead ball or bullet upon firing, and cause it to fill the grooves. But I'd guess you would probably keep loads on the light side, considering the age of the gun, so very close to groove diameter would probably give the best accuracy.

Daryl,
If there's no rim cut and the case length is in the 1 1/4" to
1 1/2" length - it may have been designed to use the 15mm brass
cartridge case made by Eley.

I think the 530" bullets should work, if you use black powder. If you use "nitro for black", I would try .535".The twist is likely to be slow, which will demand very short bullets or round balls.

Der Ami, I will use black powder. I haven't figured out , yet, how to use smokeless in a pinfire. Using a percussion cap the smokeless is said not to ignite very well.

I'll get with measuring the bores with a cast, and also the twist.

Steve, I now think the rifle chamber has a tiny rim, as it seems the 28 ga. pinfire rim will seat. My naked eye could not see that , though.

Keith , that makes sense. When I get a cast of the bore and chamber to measure, I'll know better. Thanks for your thought.
