I picked up an interesting Pinfire cape gun in Vegas. It is a Weber and Schulteis hammer gun , from Frankfurt. One bore is 16 gauge shotgun, which I can handle. The rifled bore measures about .525" between the lands. Does anyone have any experience with this type of cartridge ?

I do not with that caliber. Wow, very interesting. Will you be making a chamber casting? Thank you for sharing this beautiful gun with us. Mike

Mike, yes, I'll make a chamber cast, probably for the 16 ga. barrel, too, while I'm at it. At this point, I cannot tell if the rifle is chambered for a rim or rimless cartridge. If a rim, it is very tiny.

Mike, thanks. I'd guess the bore is closer to 14 mm, and that appears rare on the list you note. Daryl

My guess is either 24 or 28 ga. shells would work for cases. I think paper or plastic shells work better for conversion to pinfire than brass. Mike

Der Ami and skeetx, I have a bunch of 28 ga. pinfire cases, all 2 1/2" in length. It looks like they may fit the rifle chamber if cut down to 1 1/2". The inside diameter of the paper hull 28 ga. pinfire seems large enough to accommodate a bullet that fits into the bore properly.
With the bore at about .525 inches between lands and .532" to the base of the lands, the i.d.of the paper 28 ga. pinfire case is about .535 inches.
What diameter of bullet would you use, assuming my measurements are accurate?
How would one hold the bullet in the paper cartridge ?
Pictures of pinfire rifle cartridges usually show a pointed projectile. I assume this would be proper for this rifle cartridge.
Well, lots of questions at this point. Thank you all, Daryl

Daryl, I'd use a roll crimp. As to bullets, I'd start with a round ball. Most pinfire rifle bullets were spire points but were still very short. Excellent(and very reasonably priced) round ball moulds made exactly to your bore size are available from J.J.Tanner in England

Daryl, the Hornady .54 caliber round balls I have measure .530" in diameter. A .54 cal REAL bullet measures .550" at the top band and .542" at the bottom. Did you slug the bore to get an exact groove diameter? Beautiful gun. I can see why you'd want to shoot it.
