A friend is learning to do leather pads and he is doing one for my Garbi. He says he is having problems stretching the leather and getting out all the dimples. Yes he is soaking the leather. Can anyone help with the solution? Thanks.

is he using surgical tubing to hold it in place as he stretches it? I think the key to getting them stretched right is a long soak in warm water followed by surgical tubing behind the pad and a nice gentle radius on the toe. I made a jig to hold the pads, a simple piece of wood shaped like the butt only undersized by about .100" all the way around which gives you a place to put the tubing. One other thing is to not stretch the leather so much it compresses the pad. It is a very tricky job and much, much easier on a stock that is not finished or will be refinished. Hope that helps. I find that two hours soaking in water is a minimun time for ease of working leather. bill

Put the pad on the end of a piece of 5/8" thick (like a piece of pine) wood and thumb tack the leather town to the wood to hold it down stretched.

I'm nowhere near being a gunsmith, but I have some experience with leather.
Is he using pig skin?

It's the brown leather form CSMC. He says he can't get the wrinkles out. He has watched the YOU TUBE video and has all the stuff they showed.

If the leather is too thick I have problems with wrinkles sometimes. Try soaking longer to see if you can get it to relax more. Some wrinkles will flatten out when the leather dries but not as many as you wish sometimes. Any idea how thick the leather is?

CSMC sells calf and goat, not pig.
I wonder if it's calf skin and a little too thick.

Mike, have him bring it to Sanford. I will gladly help someone learn. Sometimes seeing is better than writing. See you in a week.
