I just traded into (don't ask) a Holland and Holland 28 ga. It has a leather cover pad that letters to the gun 15 1/2". The pad is maybe 3/4" inch. I would like to take the pad off and save it and put a thin pad on, any recommendations on what would look proper on this gun. I will not cut the stock. Thanks Eric

watch eBay especially the UK site for a used one or a new one here- just needs fitting and finishing http://www.connecticutshotgun.com/product/genuine-horn-butt-plates/edit--ok- or get SKB to make one that fits just right

Fitting used plates is a real crap shoot, especially if you want a proper fit on a best grade gun. The complete job entails engraved screws to match. Costly yes, but a quality job takes a fair bit of time. Even more so when fitting to a finished stock.

I hate working with horn. It smells my shop up for days. Maybe I just hate the smell of it period but when it is finished it does have a deep glow to it. More work is to use Ebony in its place but it takes me many times as long to do it. If horn was my first choice I'd gladly pay some else to do it. Like I say burn hair smell, or heated protein in the smell is not my favorite.

A lot of that can be mitigated in how it is worked. Not everyone has the options available to them that I do, I understand that. In my shop I remove the bulk of it with my CNC mill, set on slow speeds and moderate feed rate. The stuff stinks no matter what but much less so if you keep the temp down. I rarely use Ebony any more, once in a while for fore end tips. It is much softer and easier to inlet than horn.

Steve doesn't care how it smells, he just wants to see the gun.
