The last two stock extensions I had done by David Trevallion. Of the available options, he talked me into Ebony. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. One was a Scottish side-by-side and the other a British over and under. Likelihood of chipping, balance, and weight are probably the major concerns from a functional standpoint. The risk of chipping on the toe can be mitigated with a progressive and wide radius in ebony, I was told. A "hollowectomy" kept both guns the same weight following the addition. The balance point actually moved about a quarter inch Forward which is what I was looking for. So far no problems and a beautiful mount.

Ok, which should it be horn or ebony? One of this pair is going to have a new butt plate (yes I am going to keep the original leather buttplate) This is the only Best gun that I will ever own.

Ebony is OK for forearm tips but when cut thin its not going to be structurally sound...go with horn or a thin rubber pad.

Horn is the proper material and also much less subject to chipping and other damage than ebony. As mentioned by others finished horn has a glow no other material has. Well polished one can actually see down into it.
